There’s plenty to do in Bigbury, with much of it revolving around the great outdoors thanks to the sandy beach, surf and celebrated South West Coast Path. Relax on the sand or embark on a day of water sports – Bigbury is a picturesque spot for surfing or paddle boarding – and if you haven’t got all the kit, you can hire wetsuits, kayaks or surfboards with Discovery Surf School and arrange lessons whether you’re a pro seeking tips or heading out on the water for the first time.
If you fancy being on the water, without being in it, you can take a trip on the Dartmouth Ferry, the The Lady Mary Kingsbridge Ferry or the Dartmouth River Cruise to enjoy a wonderfully informative, fun and interesting day out.
After all that activity, Venus Cafe is on hand for a hot drink and light bites, or perhaps you prefer a pint at the historic The Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island. If you want to see more eatery options including cream teas, find out more on our ‘eating out locally’ section.
Bigbury is also home to a fantastic golf course, which offers great greens, stunning views, functions and a lovely restaurant. Their website, here, has more info.
If you’ve got a dog, Bigbury beach welcomes four-legged friends all year round. From October to May, dogs can join you on the main beach, but outside these months they are restricted to the west of the causeway. Canine companions are also fans of the abundant footpaths and walking opportunities in the area. In particular, Bigbury has access to the South West Coast Path, much of which belongs to the National Trust.
Some of our favourite walks include:
- Bigbury Village to Burgh Island (with fish and chips at The Pilchard Inn, 1 mile)
- Bantham to Thurlestone (complete with coffee and cake at The Village Inn in Thurlestone, 3.5 miles)
- Hope Cove to Bolberry Down (don’t forget to book lunch at Ocean Reach 4.5 miles)
- Bigbury to Ringmore (with a stop for lunch at the Journey’s End Inn 6.5 miles)
